Individual note: Thomas was born at Royal Cottages, Maerdy in 1910.
He attended school at Ferndale Grammer School, but did not complete his
education as he left school to help support the family. His father had a
greengrocery business in Maerdy and he drove a horse and cart to deliver
for his father. It is believed but not yet verified that the family moved
to Barry, South Wales for a while until the business went banckrupt. As a
young man Thomas was a keen sportsman, he played football and was a good
amateur boxer.
Thomas and his father Albert both worked in the coal mines at Cillely
Colliery, Tonyrefail. Thomas studied at night school while working at
Cillely and eventually recieved a degree in '' Mining Engineering''. He
he left the mines for a short time to work as an insurance agent, but
returned to mining.
He worked at Brittania Colliery, Gilfach Goch and Cambrian Colliery,
Clydach Vale as an Undermanager,
then moved to Bwllfa Colliery, Cwmdare as the Manager. He went on to
manage Aberaman Colliery, Rhigos Colliery and Blaengwrach Colliery before
he retired. In December 1951 while working at Bwllfa Colliery, Cwmdare he
recieved serious injuies in an accident at work. He sustained a
fractured spine and pelvis, broken ribs and extensive internal injuries.
He was not able to work for over a year.
Just prior to his retirement he and his wife Winifred designed and
supervised the building of a bungalow for their retirement in Glynneath,
it was to be called ''Anneddfa''.
His main interests were sport(mainly rugby) and gardening.

Individual note: Winifred was born in Porth, Rhondda, South Wales.
She was a very fragile child in her early years. She married Thomas
Alfred George Martin at Porth Chapel in November 1936. They lived at
Porth with her mother until about 1938 when they moved to Tonyrefail and
took her mother to live with them there. She looked after her mother
until her death in 1943. Winifred was active with the "National Savings"
while living at Tonyrefail.
After her husbands death in 1974 she lived alone in Glynneath. In a
bungalow that they had designed.
While living in Glynneath she was active with the following
organisations:- W.V.S., Womens Institute, Glynneath Sisterhood, and
Glynneath Historical Society.
She moved to Swindon in Wiltshire in 1990 to live near her son Alwyn.
In 1993 she had mastectomy due to breast cancer, and in 1994 had a hip
replacement for arthritis. By 1996 the cancer had recured and she had the
lymph glands removed from the right side. In 1998 the cancer again
returned under the right arm. It was dignosed as terminal and during 1998
secondary cancers were found behind the left eye and on the right collar
bone.
She died at Princess Margaret's Hospital Swindon on February 17 1999.

Individual note: Albert George Martin was born at 19, Pentre Road, Maerdy, Rhondda in
1889.
Met Mary Jane Williams (spouse) at English Baptist Chapel, Maerdy in 1906
approx.
Married in 1909 at Pontypridd registry office.
He had a greengrocery business in Maerdy, and also progressed to having a
retail fish business as well. May have also had a business in Barry,
Glam. Also believed to have gone bankrupt.
Set up home at 15, The Avenue, Tonyrefail in 1927, and worked at Cilely
Colliery.
While working as a coal miner he was active with the trade union and also
the labour party. He served as a councillor on the Llantrisant and
Lantwit Fadre District Council (Poss from 1946), is known to be a
councillor in 1951(Newspaper cutting at time of 50th wedding
anniversary), and held the position of Council Chairman for a year
(1954/55). Was Chairman of N.U.M. Lodge at Cilely from 1928, and
Secretary of Lodge from 1938.
1933, Appointed as a school governer for Tonyrefail Secondary School. A
member of the first governing group for that school.
Albert retired early from mining due to silicosis.
He died in hospital at Church Village, nr Pontypridd from cancer.
Cremated at Glyntaff Crematorium, Pontypridd on October 4th 1968.
